Coffee House are now holding a vote on what the nub of Gordon Brown’s issue really is. They reckon it’s a toss-up between the 10p tax band, Brown’s lack of humility, his relentless inaccurate statistics or his uncontested ascension to the top. Needless to say, there are many who agree (too many to link to!), and others who can think of other reasons. My own thoughts on the subject are, of course, a matter of public record.

All these journos are, of course, desperately searching for a narrative. To recap:

Journalists and commentators, because they are fundamentally writers and storytellers, feel the urge always to create a story line out of an event. History isn’t made up of just “one bloody thing after another” to them, it’s a woven tapestry of individual stories, each with their own little arc, each with their own concealments and misunderstandings.

For today, if this is a narrative, the words of Tigger seem most appropriate for Gordon Brown:

“Please, for goodness’ sakes, narrate me down from here!
