It’s the Haltemprice & Howden by-election today. Does anyone care?
NO.
I’ve expended a lot of energy blogging David Davis’ resignation (now colloquially referred to as ‘the flan in the cupboard’ for reasons unspecified) and I stand by what I said right at the beginning: David Davis has shown himself to be a principled politician with a cause, but ultimately he’s overestimated the will of the public and the media to get involved when they have a reason to. I don’t think he realised that Labour would chicken out on him like that. I think he was naïve and expected honour among thieves. He’s now left himself in a weaker position than before – whatever the result of the coming election is.
Essentially, we all know what the by-election results will be. David Davis will win by a landslide as his competitors are all from the Bloody Stupid Party1. Politics Home (and I believe them) say that the campaign has had no discernable effect on public opinion concerning 42 days. To add insult to injury, Davis’ approval rating has dropped over the course of the campaign from -1 to -4. He’s more famous, but less appreciated.
All this is to say, the flan has collapsed, and no amount of whipped cream is going to save it.
- Okay, it’s normally referred to as the Socialist Equality Party, but we’ll let that slide [↩]

Catching up on posts – no, I haven’t gone away, just a dodgy line and everybody passing the buck.
I was disappointed that no channel put a spoof by-election special on. Michael Crick tried to interview all 27 candidates on the same day for Newsnight last week, but people such as David Icke refused to take part because he reckoned Crick would take the pee. As if.
Lesson: never put a prick in a flan.
