Orange Party (not known for Baracknophilia) has been running a series of posts suggesting that Barack Obama not only isn’t American, but also isn’t even Barack Obama. He is, according to rumour and suspicion, actually an Indonesian Muslim by the name of Barry Soetoro, hell-bent on becoming president so as to… Well, so as to something or other.
The ‘Muslim Manchurian Candidate’ meme has been substantially documented elsewhere, and seems to be quite catching among those most fervently opposed to the One. The earliest I remember hearing the suggestion that one of the presidential nominees was actually a terrorist sleeper was on Have I Got News For You, and it was Paul Merton talking about John McCain – which just goes to show how far we’ve come, really.
I’m going to invent a new rule of thumb here. If a conspiracy theory sounds just on the verge of plausible, but only because you read about it on the internet, it’s probably a load of complete rubbish.
