Jackie Ashley thinks Glenrothes will be the final countdown for our Prime Minister. James Forsyth agrees with her. So does Iain Dale.

And they’re wrong.

You see, it’s backwards – Gordon Brown isn’t tested at by-elections anymore. Gordon Brown has already long been weighed, measured and found wanting. Prime Ministers are tested in office, and Gordon Brown has failed.

No, the people who will be tested at the Labour conference next week, and the Glenrothes by-election, are those who would ascend to the throne. Have they got the courage to take the moment and seize it and own it, to oust the man who’s keeping them (and possibly the country) back?

So, Mssrs Milliband, Straw, Johnson, Reid, and Ms Harman. Will you take the risks when it matters? Can you?

We’ll find out, at Glenrothes.
