Re: the phrase 'The Wife': do = damned = don't.

I try not to let it bother me. Besides, if she doesn't care I don't care. And she doesn't. And neither do I.

Similar feelings about the phrase "when Ellie [got/became] pregnant". God knows how many times I've had to defend that one. I'll write my defence up here as a post one of these. You'll agree with me.

"...the wife..."? I'm conflicted. 'The' is detached whereas 'my' denotes ownership. Naming is similar to tagging, and I can be anonymous on a blog...what is a so-called feminist to do? An aside: watching Kathy Lette on today's Adam Boulton show (Sky) scorning the differential between men and women's wages was like seeing the family goldfish die.

I hate shopping unless it's online. The husband has bought and sent one pressie, as have I (not to each other, that would be silly). Total extras for Christmas will be c.£200, that's around the norm for Chez Tizzy.

I've some sympathy for the Main Streets (it's not all their fault) and for parents of small children who have allowed their kids to mix with others and to be seduced by the whole thing and given them the gift of at least 30 years of unnecessary expense (I would say that, of course).

If the UK is so stuffed full of non-Christian people why not the associated headlines?

From memory, the average lifespan of a High/Main Street business is 40 years. RIP Woolies, but it was overdue. Please note examples who claim a 50% reduction in profits - they are still making profits. Yes, that might mean they won't be able to invest in expanding in the next 1,2 or 3 years ahead but it should mean, in a declining CPI/RPI, that they should be able to continue much as before but without the trimmings. Unless someone's telling porkies.

I also look forward to see what this gvt's proposals for Min Wages will be - that shows intent.
