Tom Harris Talks Sense on Iraq
Those who opposed the war will never accept that [it was worth it]. And although smaller in number, those who single mindedly, without a shadow of a doubt, called for invasion, will maintain their view as well.
I remain optimistic. I still believe that, on balance, Iraq’s future holds more promise, for its people and for the wider region, than pre-invasion.
I supported the war based on the information from the government. I’ll never forgive Blair and the others who lied to us over Iraq1. I imagine Mr Harris is in the same boat, although he probably doesn’t see it quite that way.
I don’t think we should regret winning the freedom of the people of Iraq, though. I can easily believe that Saddam Hussein would have killed more Iraqis over the last 5 years than the war has done. I also cannot see the removal of an oppressive dictator as being anything other than a positive.
It’s just a disgrace we didn’t have a plan for what would happen after we won.
