MPs Screwing The Taxpayer Awards 2009
Having said that the bottom line of claimed expenses is not a great way to judge politicians, we can still have plenty of fun at their expense, and criticise those who flagrantly waste their money. And stepping up to the plate to perform just this function is Letters From A Tory, with the National ‘Screwing The Taxpayer Awards’ for 2009!
There’s been a stunning total of £92,749,293 spent on expenses by MPs over the last year. The better part of One Hundred Million Pounds Sterling. That’s astonishing in anyone’s book.
Never before in the history of human endeavour has so much been spent by so few to achieve so little.
I was shouted down on Webcameron for daring to suggest raising the basic pay of MPs to £100-150K (let’s call it £250K, now) but they pay all expenses (bar some travel help for those not living near London).
It’s the only way to go, plus it has the advantage of attracting more Independents.
