Devil’s Kitchen added a rather excellent point to my last post on why Governments should fear blogs which is worth highlighting1:
The thing that some miss is that libertarians such as Guido, your humble Devil and any amount of other bloggers are always in opposition to the government because we are always in opposition to the state.
I think ‘always in opposition’ is a fantastic way of putting it. Just like competition keeps businesses working for their customers, opposition is supposed to keep governments working for their people.
The rise of the blogosphere in many ways shows that the Conservatives have utterly failed to oppose the government properly – if they had been doing their job properly, there’d be no need for the blogs to be doing it for them.
Also, Bill Sticker makes a great point in the comments “The Conservatives have nothing to fear from bloggers if they’ve done nothing wrong.”
Indeed. To David Cameron (say it with me): If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.
Surely “viscous” rumours would stay where they are rather than spread? Or would they spread, but only very slowly…?
Vicious rumours – now they really do spread quickly…
(I’ll resing miself to having to trilpe-check all my spelingg from know one…)
“The Conservatives have nothing to fear from bloggers if they’ve done nothing wrong.”
Not sure about that. While many bloggers attack on the basis of evidence, many do not.
