That said, I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has read, commented, complimented, insulted or linked to this blog over the past month, and indeed before that. You’re all wonderful and I’m touched. I’d buy you all a pint, but internet technology has not yet progressed to the point where that is possible¹.

Letmebuyyouadrink.com sounds an awesome idea.
I’m just trying to think how it would work…
Could be like a drinks delivery service – you buy a drink for someone, entering the e-mail address of the recipient, who then has to accept the drink by providing an address (/nearest pub?) to the service, who then delivers it.
The buyer pays the service, which then buys the drink, presumably with the buyer paying more than the usual price.
I wonder if it would catch on though… and how many bloggers/ relatively anonymous drinks buyers are out there? :S

…or, ooh, and this may be better – it’s a service whereby the buyer submits the e-mail address of the recipient, paying for a voucher for a drink that would be redeemable (for said drink) in pub chain across the country. It would be printable by the guy who’s e-mail address it is, and they get the drink for free at the pub, paid for by the buyer. And the service could make a small mark-up on every drink bought.
Yeah, that could work… provided you get all the pubs on-side… who could then use the service to advertise (and the same for drinks companies)!

I have a habit of issuing virtual beer vouchers but they are only redeemable in person by arrangement. I am sure that I have issued more of these vouchers than there are Air Miles.

Anton, you’ve hit upon almost the exact implementation I had in mind – I even considered emailing Wetherspoons with the idea (this was a few months back – I kick ideas about a lot).

Essentially it would work like this: you create an account with lmbyad.com, and enter credit card details (or possibly buy credits). To send a voucher you enter an email address of the intended recipient and a maximum value of drink they can buy. A voucher is created with a unique (non-sequential) barcode reference. The recipient takes the voucher into a lmbyad.com-registered pub or bar, who scan the voucher and verify the code. The buyer’s card (or account) is then debited the cost of the drink, or the maximum value of the voucher, whichever is lower.

All that a pub would have to do to participate is install some point-of-sale software which can contact lmbyad.com and verify the voucher codes. Accounts with the pubs can be settled on a monthly basis.

Now I just need a patent attorney to turn up and tell me whether I’ve just ceded the right to hold a patent on this implementation thanks to mentioning it in a public forum…
