Make the very best products. Business will follow.
Steve Jobs on why Apple doesn’t bother doing market research:
It’s not about pop culture, and it’s not about fooling people, and it’s not about convincing people that they want something they don’t. We figure out what we want. And I think we’re pretty good at having the right discipline to think through whether a lot of other people are going to want it, too. That’s what we get paid to do.
I’ve been thinking about this approach to design recently – designing things for yourself, then selling them to people like you. Nice to see I’m in good company.
It works for blogging, too1 – if you write stuff that you’d want to read, chances are there’s at least somebody out there who’ll be interested in the same things as you. The downside, of course, is that if you turn out to be completely unlike everyone else in the world, you’ve built something with an audience of one.
